Quantum in Logistics

Rising digitalization, increasing supply chain constraints, and ever-changing customer demands have challenged logistics operations across the world. To transform supply chain business challenges into advantages, companies should incorporate new technologies—including quantum computing—into their operations now.

Optimizing eCommerce Scheduling

The Pattison Food Group (PFG) is the largest purveyor of food and healthcare products in western Canada, with more than 100 retail locations offering online ordering. Managing the driver schedules for those orders used to be a manual task. Today, PFG is leveraging the processing power of D-Wave’s quantum computing solutions to efficiently and reliably generate schedules for its delivery drivers for its e-commerce business, trimming what was once an 80-hour task to just 15 hours each week.

Quantum Computing Keeps a Tour on Track

Momentum, a division of IPG, is no stranger to thorny logistical problems. Every year, this marketing agency successfully plans and launches up to 18,000 in-person “brand experience” events. But when confronted with the prospect of coordinating four tours encompassing 80 events at 40 stores separated by hundreds of miles, they opted to partner with D-Wave to see how the company’s quantum computing capabilities might streamline the planning process.

D-Wave’s quantum system has been used as part of the SavantX HONE optimization engine at the Port of Los Angeles. The goal is to expedite delivery of containers out of the terminal while increasing the amount of cargo that can be handled.

“With HONE and D-Wave, each huge crane handled 60% more cargo per day, while the turnaround time for trucks was reduced by 12%.”
